This design was inspired by the Tulip craze in Holland in 1636 and 1637, a period when the newly prosperous Dutch bought and sold rare tulips whose bulbs yielded spotted and striped flowers. The Dutch became so enamored with Tulips that the price of some highly coveted bulbs increased 1200%! Some bulbs even cost the equivalent of a house or what a skilled craftsman made in a year! But, almost as quickly as it started, the Tulip craze abruptly ended (and the beauty of tulips could be enjoyed by everyone for a song!).
