Many believe the original bell was commissioned (before America’s founding) to celebrate the 50th anniversary of William Penn’s Charter of Privileges, which gave Pennsylvanians religious and political self-governance liberties. Religiosity was of such importance that the Liberty Bell’s inscription, “Proclaim liberty throughout all the land unto all the inhabitants thereof” is a Biblical verse from the book of Leviticus. This design includes a border of keystones (because Pennsylvania is known as the Keystone State), the Liberty Bell transcription, and the year commissioned.
